Collection: Wesley Brown

State College, PA

Wesley T. Brown is a ceramic artist who creates both monumental sculptures and utilitarian vessels to convey both struggle and triumph through cracked surfaces, striking silhouettes, and bold compositions. Brown combines smooth wheel-thrown parts with heavily-textured slabs to create works that are a fusion of the unknown and the familiar. Through the vessel, Brown joyfully  explores the juxtaposition of bold configurations and utilitarian sensibilities, creating grand compositions designed for the hand.

Brown was born in California and raised in Dayton, Ohio. Brown found clay in high school and continued with the medium to graduate from Sinclair Community College (Dayton, OH), where he earned his AA in Art in 2012. He then continued onto a BFA from Bowling Green State University (OH) in 2014, and an MFA from Indiana University Bloomington in 2018. During his schooling, Brown sought out and worked for such potters as Mark Goertzen, Daniel Johnston, and Daniel Evans. Through these working opportunities and school, he learned the importance of conveying an authentic voice through material.
