Talkin' Tiles, 25SpAH2

Tiles have been used to protect and decorate interior and exterior building surfaces for centuries and all over the world. There are many techniques that have been used to make images using tiles. Stone or wood was often used for base relief carvings, but clay was used extensively during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Much of this work was made using molds to get reproducible results, but individual carving was used to make originals to mold, unique pieces for a special order or to enhance molded pieces. This class will explore rendering images in relief. You will learn techniques for making repeatable and scalable carvings without the need for making and storing molds. Clay type, drying methods and firing schedules will all be discussed.
